Timothy McDevitt and Pearl Sun to Lead New Edvard Munch Musical at National Sawdust

Dear Edvard, a new music-theater piece, will make its New York premiere at National Sawdust on Sunday, December 10th, at 4pm. Directed by Kevin Newbury with music direction by Paul Masse, the musical explores the life and loves of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944).

Written by Richard Michelson and Steven Schoenberg, Dear Edvard is part art history biopic, love story, psychological exploration and family drama. Munch, Timothy McDevitt (City Center Brigadoon, Live from Lincoln Center Carousel) is set in the same hospital room at Dr. Jacobsen's Clinic for Nervous Disorders and Alcoholism, where the artist committed himself in 1908.

His young nurse, Pearl Sun (If Then, Next to Normal) now elderly, confesses her long ago passion for her famous patient, and transports us back to the beginnings of psychoanalysis, sexual liberation, and the birth of modern art. Through her eyes we meet the various women in Munch's life, and a picture emerges of the social and emotional upheavals that would affect and form the iconic artist, as well as reflecting the anxiety, self-awareness and pursuit of meaning and inner-peace that have come to define our own lives today.

This performance is supported in part by the Royal Norwegian Consulate General.
