Brooklyn Nonprofit CAMBA To Showcase South African Shona Sculptures

Continuing the celebration of their 40thyear anniversary, Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization CAMBA will again showcase an extensive collection of sculptures from Zimbabwe and honor their dedicated volunteers and supporters at a four-day exhibition and public sale at the Shona Gallery (19 Winthrop Street, 4th Fl.) on April 6-9 2017.

The festivities begin on Thursday, April 6, 2017 with a benefit cocktail reception at 6:00p.m.honoring CAMBA's dedicated supporters and volunteers including: Meredith Dros, Penguin Random House Global Walk; Collegiate Express Tutors and volunteers from The Kensington Family Shelter. The FREE exhibition and public sale begin on Friday April 7 through Sunday, April 9, showcasing over 650 pieces of original, affordable art will be on display at the 1500-square foot gallery, located in the Prospect Heights /Lefferts Gardens section of the borough and purchases will help the multiservice agency to continue providing services for 45,000 New Yorkers in need

Zimbabwe, a southern African country whose name literally means "the house of stone," is known for its remarkable stone sculptors and the Shona people are the largest ethnic group in the country. Their stone carving tradition dates back to the 10th century. Some Shona sculptors are considered to be among the top sculptors in the world including Nicholas Tandi, Henry Munyaradzi and Colleen Madamombe. Exhibition and sale hours are from 1:00p.m. - 6:00p.m. The Shona Gallery can be reached by taking the "Q" subway to Brooklyn's Parkside Avenue station or the "B" or "S" to the Prospect Park station.
