Wakefield Repertory Theatre is proud to announce their new production of “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” will be opening next week.
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by Hugh Wheeler, “Sweeney Todd” is based on an adaptation of a book by Christopher Bond. This musical thriller tells the tale of an unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe. Many versions have been on stage and you have seen the movie, but join us for a truly interesting perspective, “steampunk”.
Our creative Artistic Director, Elizabeth Havenor, takes us on a spectacular dark journey in the true theme of “steampunk”. “Steampunk” is a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century. Taking place in the Victorian era it includes advanced machines based on 19th century technology. This creates a beautiful visual and visceral experience.
