Whistler in the Dark Theatre opens its sixth season with TEd Hughes's Tales from Ovid, a beautiful and vivid re-imagining of the Metamorphoses and winner of the Whitbread Prize in 1997.

Ovid's Metamorphoses frames the myths that have been the basis for countless contemporary stories of transformation, transcendent passion, and gods and mortals locked in combat. Translator TEd Hughes states that "above all, Ovid was interested in passion. Or rather, in what passion feels like to the one possessed by it." Whistler in the Dark presents ten myths that explore passions so extreme that the characters are catapulted into new and sometimes supernatural states of being.

Since its inception, Whistler in the Dark has forged a reputation as a company dedicated to stripping away extraneous trappings from their productions. With Tales from Ovid, the company pushes this aesthetic to new levels: Artistic Director Meg Taintor states, "For Ovid, instead of creating the myriad of transformations that the script calls for through an intricate design, we've chosen to have our actors focus on making these changes using only their bodies, Hughes' beautiful language, and the two aerial silks that we have been training on for the past few months."

In the tight intimacy of The Factory Theatre, five actors play over 30 characters without sets, props or costumes, using a combination of aerial acrobatics and physical movement stemming from the work of Jacques Lecoq to transform themselves into birds, gods, insects, bears and more.

Tales from Ovid contains violence and scenes of a sexual nature, and is intended for mature audiences.
