Student Blog: Four Musicals to Get You in the Christmas Spirit

It's that time of the year to start getting in the holiday spirit! The easiest way for me to get in the holiday spirit is through music. Here are four musicals (and some honorable mentions) for you to listen to to get yourself in the holiday spirit!

1. Elf: The Musical

Elf: The Musical is based on the 2003 movie of the same name starring Will Ferrel. Elf is the story of Buddy who has lived as an elf in the North Pole his whole life. When Buddy learns he is actually human, and not an elf, he sets out to New York City to find his father. This musical is filled with upbeat Christmas tunes with music by Mattew Sklar with lyrics by Chad Beguelin. My personal favorites are "The Story of Buddy" and "Sparklejollytwinklejingley".

2. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical is based on the classic Dr. Seuss story. The musical, with music by Mel Marvin and lyrics by Timothy Mason, stars Patrick Page as the Grinch. Even though the Grinch hates Christmas the spirit of the Whos of Whoville will put you in the Christmas spirit. The show features the song "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch". There is also a live television version of the musical starring Matthew Morrison as the Grinch.

3. A Christmas Story: The Musical

A Christmas Story: The Musical is based on a classic Christmas movie with the same name. The music and lyrics for this show were written by Ben Pasek and Justin Paul (the team behind Dear Evan Hansen). This story embodies the joy that a child feels during Christmas time and is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. My favorite songs from this show are "It All Comes Down to Christmas" and "Somewhere Hovering Over Indiana". You can also listen to the live television version which includes a catchy Hanukkah song sung by Ana Gasteyer, which is not included in the Broadway version.

4. White Christmas

Based on the film with the same name, White Christmas features the music of legendary composer Irving Berlin. This show follows two male singers who join a sister act to perform a Christmas show in Vermont. This show features the classic Christmas song "White Christmas" which is sure to make you feel that holiday spirit.

Honorable Mentions

Holiday Inn- This musical, based on the film with the same name, also feature the music of Irving Berlin including "White Christmas"

Mame- The classic Christmas song "We Need a Little Christmas" comes from this musical!

Annie- The finale of this classic musical is set during Christmas. The song is called "A New Deal for Christmas".

Caroline or Change- Caroline or Change (which is currently playing on Broadway at Studio 54) has a snappy Christmas song called "Santa Comin' Caroline".

Happy Holidays!
