Calling All Writers For Provincetown Playwrights Lab Gathering!

On Saturday, December 15th from 2-4pm, the Provincetown Theater will host a social gathering for writers throughout the region interested in participating in the future of the Provincetown Playwrights Lab in the lobby of the playhouse at 238 Bradford Street in Provincetown, MA. Munchies, seasonal goodies, and libations will be served. The event is both an informal discussion of the Lab's future needs and goals, as well as a celebratory "homecoming."

For nearly thirty years, the Provincetown Playwrights Lab has been a fluid collective of regional playwrights from Cape Cod and beyond, meeting on a semi-regular basis in Provincetown to hone their craft and develop new plays in a supportive group-style tradition. Three years ago, they stepped away from their longtime residency at the Provincetown Theater. "Thankfully, 2019 will mark their return," says Provincetown Theater artistic director David Drake. "As a community arts institution located in Provincetown - which is globally considered the Birthplace of American Theater," Drake states, "I feel a tremendous responsibility to help shelter and shepherd the voices of local writers. Inviting the Lab back under our roof is an opportunity to expand their creativity to its fullest potential, something key to our mission." Likewise, Wellfleet playwright Candace Perry says, "By creating a place where new plays can be discussed, dissected, and improved, the Provincetown Playwrights Lab has nurtured my work for many years. Returning to collaborate with the Provincetown Theater feels like coming home."

Starting in January 2019, the Lab will resume regular meetings twice a month at the Provincetown Theater. (Meeting dates to be determined by group consensus at the December 15th gathering.) Looking forward, the Theater and the Lab will again produce the annual 24 HOUR PLAYS on President's Day Weekend, February 15-17, 2019. Says 24HP veteran Dian Hamilton, "In all nine years of the 24 HOUR PLAYS, the Provincetown Playwrights Lab has given me the opportunity to grow my skills as a writer -- but also as a producer, director, and actor! With new energy, and new ideas, I'm so looking forward to our exciting new collaboration with the Provincetown Theater."
