Bridge Rep Opens Second Season With World Premiere Of THE FORGETTING CURVE, 9/4-9/27
After an ambitious and successful inaugural season, Bridge Rep of Boston will return with the world premiere of The Forgetting Curve, by Vanda, playing in September on the Wimberly Stage in the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, presented in partnership with Theatrum Mundi Productions.
The piece is inspired in part by the true-life story of a man now known as Patient HM. Desperate to cure his epilepsy, he underwent an experimental neurosurgery in 1953. Shockingly, the procedure destroyed his brain's ability to form new memories. In The Forgetting Curve, fictional neuroscientist Dr. Laura Nebbens has studied HM intensively for several decades, and on the eve of accepting a prestigious award, struggles to reconcile all she has sacrificed to leave the legacy of her life's work.
The Forgetting Curve's producing and creative teams combine a blend of both local and New York-based talent. Bridge Rep is partnering with Kimberly Loren Eaton of Theatrum Mundi Productions to produce the piece. Associate Producers are Alan Swanke, Cole Burden and Playhouse Creatures Theatre Company. The show's playwright is an Edward Albee Fellow, and the cast features Boston favorite Dale Place, as well as Broadway veteran Ann Talman. The creative team features Boston University MFA graduates Annie Wiegand (Lighting) and Julia Noulin - Merat (Scenic), along with New York-based designers Meganne George (Costumes) and Eamonn Farrell (Projections). Joining from nearby Providence are Shura Baryshnikov (Movement) and Bevin Kelley (Sound Design and Music Composition). Bridge Rep Artistic Associates Esme Allen and John Tracey are tag-teaming Properties.
Bridge Rep's first two mission points are to connect actors to audiences and artists to artists. By pursuing a co-production, the company realizes both of these goals. As Producing Artistic Director, Olivia D'Ambrosio, explains, "The pooled resources allow us to present a large-cast ensemble piece. It is a special experience for the audience to get to interact with so many actors in the space. Also, the various producers have brought in artists from Boston, New York and Providence - this cross germination allows for new ideas and approaches to be shared and forged."
Co-producer Kimberly Loren Eaton adds, "The Forgetting Curve presents complex scientific ideas in an approachable and artistic way. It also explores universal themes of memory and legacy - all while creating 25 new jobs."
After the Boston production, The Forgetting Curve will be presented as a reading in November in Washington, DC at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. A transfer of the full production to New York City is planned to follow.
