Boch Center Celebrates Janis Joplin's 75th Birthday

The Boch Center announced today that it is working with local archivist David Bieber to celebrate what would have been Janis Joplin's 75th birthday during its presentation of A Night With Janis Joplin at the Boch Center Shubert Theatre January 19-20, 2018. The birthday celebration will display historic pieces from Bieber's archive, bringing to life the legacy of rock and roll icon Janis Joplin.

"We're thrilled to be working with David to offer patrons an exciting, one-of-a-kind birthday add-on during our upcoming presentation of A Night With Janis Joplin," said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., President & CEO of the Boch Center. "By tapping into David's collection of pop culture memorabilia, we'll be filling the Shubert Theatre lobby with special items that pay homage to the incredible career of Janis Joplin. This will include concert posters, photos, records, newspaper headlines and more. This is the perfect opportunity for diehard Janis fans to relive the glory days and for younger generations to be introduced to the magic that was Janis Joplin before seeing the show."

All patrons will be able to explore the 75th birthday display before the show and during intermission. Doors open 45 minutes prior to show time.

"The psychedelic excitement of Janis Joplin's dramatic style and talent will be honored in the Shubert Theatre lobby," said David Bieber. "Memorable artifacts range from original colorful San Francisco Winterland concert handbills to vintage Korean albums of Cheap Thrills and Pearl, as well as posthumous cover features and photos in copies of Rolling Stone, the Boston Evening Globe and the Washington Post, poignantly remembering Janis' life."

A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Janis Joplin and her biggest musical influences - trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, all of whom inspired Joplin to become one of Rock 'n' Roll's greatest legends. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. Her unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made Joplin a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Audiences will enjoy Joplin's favorites, including "Piece of My Heart," "Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," and many others.

The New York Times raved that A Night With Janis Joplin "rocks the house" and Variety called it "electrifying."

A Night With Janis Joplin is created, written and directed by Randy Johnson and stars Newton native Kelly McIntyre as Janis Joplin.
