WICKED, MAMMA MIA! et al. Set for Broadway in Boise at Morrison Center in 2010-2011

In 1997 the Morrison Center partnered with a Utah-based agency in order to present top-notch entertainment in Boise. Since that time, the Treasure Valley has enjoyed productions such as: Jesus Christ Superstar; the first National tour of Miss Saigon; Annie; Cats; Chicago; Rent; and the international mega hit Mamma Mia!. Other notable events stemming from this collaboration include: David Copperfield; Bill Cosby; Kurt Bestor; and HAl Holbrook's Mark Twain.

The 2010-2011 Fred Meyer Broadway in Boise Season includes a premiere engagement of Wicked May 4-15, 2011. Called "a cultural phenomenon" by Variety and just named "the defining musical of the decade" by The New York Times, "Wicked" is the winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards. There are currently eight productions of "Wicked" playing worldwide; the show will play in Boise for two weeks.

Season Details

The Color Purple, 3 & 8 p.m., Sept. 25, 2 p.m. Sept. 26.

The Color Purple is a soul-stirring musical based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the film by Steven Spielberg. It is the unforgettable and inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds her unique voice in the world. Nominated for 11 Tony Awards,The Color Purple is a landmark theatrical event, a celebration of love and a Broadway phenomenon. With a joyous Grammy-nominated score featuring jazz, gospel and blues, the show is capturing the hearts of young and old and uniting audiences in a community of joy.

Grease, 8 p.m. Jan. 14 and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jan. 15.

Take a trip to a simpler time of poodle skirts, drive-ins and T-birds with Grease. "Bad boy" Danny and "the girl next door" Sandy fall in love all over again to the tune of your favorite songs: Summer Nights, Greased Lightnin' and We Go Together, as well as additional songs from the hit movie: Grease, Hopelessly Devoted to You and You're the One That I want. So throw your mittens around your kittens and hand jive the night away with the show that'll make you want to stand up and shout, "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop A-wop-bam-boom!"

Legally Blonde, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7-9.

It's here, and it's "an Elle of a show" (Time Magazine). The hilarious MGM film is Broadway's new smash hit musical, and now Legally Blonde, the Musical is coming to Boise. Legally Blonde follows sorority star Elle Woods, an underestimated blonde who doesn't take no for an answer. When her boyfriend dumps her for someone more "serious," Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, she proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.

Fiddler on the Roof, 7:30 p.m. March 7-9.

The Tony Award-winning musical that has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its universal appeal embarks on its North American tour. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof has been lauded by critics again and again. Filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, including Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were A Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset, Fiddler on the Roof is a timeless classic.

Wicked, May 4-15, 2011, 16 performances.

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the Land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete - and completely satisfying - new musical in a long time," according to USA Today.

Mamma Mia! 7:30 p.m. June 14-16

Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good show that has audiences coming back again and again to relive the thrill. Now it's your turn to have the time of your life at this smash-hit musical that combines ABBA's greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, S.O.S., Super Trouper, Take A Chance on Me and The Winner Takes it All, with an enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship. Whether it's your first visit or your 14th, see the show that has the whole world coming back for more.

The aforementioned partner is NewSpace Entertainment, an independent live theatre and concert agency, with over 25 years of experience presenting events throughout North America. John Ballard, Steve Boulay and Bruce Granath, principals of NewSpace Entertainment, have worked together since 1987 when The Space Agency moved to Salt Lake City. In January 2007, Mr. Ballard announced that the Utah-based business would end its relationship with the Live Nation Corporation and return to its independent roots. "We are very excited to have this opportunity. The name NewSpace Entertainment is a nod to our past and a commitment to the future." Mr. Ballard explained.
