On February 24th, Alley Repertory Theater will open BUYER & CELLAR by Jonathan Tolins, a comedy about the idiosyncrasies of the real Barbra Streisand, starring Jodi Eichelberger. Directed by Alley Rep Artistic Director Buffie Main, BUYER & CELLAR will run for three weekends at Visual Arts Collective with doors opening at 7:00 pm and the show beginning at 8:00 pm. Starting at 7:30 pm on show nights, Let Harris Neustaedter will sing a set of Streisand classics with live accompaniment.
"I play six characters in this show," said Eichelberger who performed in the original cast of the Tony award-winning musical Avenue Q on Broadway and now leads the popular monthly storytelling event Story Story Night. "The rehearsal process has been like shopping in a mall of different parts of my own personality. I have been most surprised to find the aspects of Barbra Streisand that are living inside of me. Barbra says, 'I just like to get things the way I think they should be,' and I find myself thinking, 'Me too, Barbra. Me too.'"
BUYER & CELLAR premiered off-Broadway in 2013. The premise came from Barbra Streisand's book, My Passion for Design, wherein she describes the early-19th-Century-replica shops that underlie her Malibu estate. BUYER & CELLAR explores a fictional world where ex-Disneyland cast member Alex More (Eichelberger) is hired to work in Bab's basement shopping mall to hilarious results.
BUYER & CELLAR is the final show in Alley Rep's Kill the Darlings 2016/2017 series. To keep up with the series, theatergoers can follow Alley Rep on Facebook and Instagram. Tickets available at the door and www.alleyrep.org.
