La descente aux enfers d'un poète miné par ses échecs amoureux. Au théâtre bruxellois de La Monnaie, Krzysztof Warlikowski s'empare de l'opéra posthume d'Offenbach. Sous la direction d'Alain Altinoglu, chef d'orchestre de l'Opéra de Bruxelles, la soprano Patricia Petibon partage l'affiche avec le ténor américain Eric Cutler.
Protagoniste de trois de ses contes, le poète E. T. A. Hoffmann revit ses histoires d'amour avec la poupée automate Olympia, la chanteuse Antonia et la courtisane Giulietta...
Opéra posthume d'Offenbach, Les contes d'Hoffmann, créé en 1881 à l'Opéra Comique, retrouve une nouvelle jeunesse dans cette production présentée en 2019 à La Monnaie de Bruxelles, à l'occasion du 200e anniversaire de la naissance du compositeur français, roi de l'opérette. Le metteur en scène Krzysztof Warlikowski (Don Carlos) y fait la part belle au cinéma hollywoodien. Sous la direction d'Alain Altinoglu, chef d'orchestre de l'Opéra de Bruxelles, la soprano Patricia Petibon, qui partage l'affiche avec le ténor américain Eric Cutler, relève le défi d'interpréter quatre rôles : ceux des trois femmes fantasmées par le poète, et celui de Stella, l'aspirante comédienne dont il est le pygmalion.
