The Highwood Theatre's All-Student Company Presents PETER AND THE STARCATCHER

By:

All aboard the journey to Neverland! Continuing Highwood's highly anticipated 16th Season of productions, Rick Elice's Tony Award Winning play Peter and the Starcatcher arrives just in time for the holidays at The Highwood Theatre: presented from December 7th - 16th, 2018 in the heart of downtown Silver Spring. Premiering two phenomenal student casts performing in repertory (2nd-7th graders & 8th-12th graders) and Highwood's most complex stage design to-date, this production combines the imaginative minds of over 40 youth cast & technical crew in sharing the untold, moving prequel to Peter Pan.

Evoking the magical spirit of J.M. Barrie's beloved source material, Peter and the Starcatcher provides the origin story for "The Boy Who Never Grew Up" and the Neverland world we have all come to know - but not without its own share of twists and turns. Featuring mermaids, singing pirates, and a touching story of friendship and loyalty, this play with music inspires the child within us to never grow up.

Unlike its predecessor, Elice's take leaves much of the 'magic' to the interpretation of the actors and the audience. From flying crocodiles to levitating actors, the storytelling nature of the show proves a thrilling challenge for any ensemble: especially for a company like Highwood's with the mission of "building community through theatre." In addition to narrating much of the action, Starcatcher requires its actors to bring to life many different elements - characters, set pieces, and even locations - through collective use of their bodies, voices and movement.

Starcatcher will also mark Highwood's most technically complex set yet: the construction of two pirate ships. Director Matthew Nicola elaborates on this bold vision and what that means for audience experience: "A show like Peter and the Starcatcher requires limitless creativity from all involved, and what better production to pull out all the technical stops for? Our intimate space allows audiences to experience this magical journey right alongside the actors." Nicola adds, "the work of our talented student tech team has only further proven the lessons of this beautiful play: that the power of imagination and bonds of a community can truly change the world. We cannot wait audiences to share in this experience!"
