Baltimore Young Actors Academy Spotlighters Theatre Seeks Teaching Artists

The Young Actors Academy at Spotlighters Theatre is seeking qualified candidates for a number of teaching artist positions.

All eligible candidates must be familiar and ready for the rigors, and joys, of working with young people in a summer camp environment. A good sense of humor, flexibility, and a team spirit are necessities.

Lower School Director (Grades 3-5)
Dates needed: July 2 through July 23, with a few scattered days in May/June for meetings/orientation

The Lower School Director oversees a group of ten to fifteen 3rd through 5th grade students through a 3-week, 4 day per week program. This program focuses on devising work through play, and guiding students through the basics of solid performance. This position is assisted by one dedicated teaching assistant, a college/graduate student who is studying both theatre and education.

Acting Methods & Techniques Instructor (Grades 6-12)
Dates needed: July 9 through August 10, with a few scattered days in May/June for meetings/orientation

This instructor will teach two core 90-minute classes (to both a middle and high school class) through a 5-week, 4 day per week program. This class will focus on the fundamentals of acting technique, and introduce different methods for performance while maintaining a sense of fun and play that is age appropriate. An instructor who has knowledge of both physical methods (such as Chekhov, Viewpoints, LeCoq) and internal methods (those based on Stanislavsky) is desirable. This instructor will also direct or co-direct one of the Shakespearean productions, either with the middle or high schoolers. This position is assisted by one dedicated teaching assistant, a college/graduate student who is studying both theatre and education.

Theatre History & Styles Instructor (Grades 6-12)
Dates needed: July 9 through August 10, with a few scattered days in May/June for meetings/orientation

This instructor will teach two core 90-minute classes (to both a middle and high school class) through a 5-week, 4 day per week program. This class will prepare students to work on their Shakespearean piece by introducing Shakespeare in a fun way (scanscion, historical context of Shakespeare etc). This instructor will also explore one or two other historical styles (Greek theatre, commedia, Kabuki, Bunraku, etc). These styles can cater to the skills and styles of the instructor. This class is also, crucially, an opportunity for students to explore devised work. This instructor will also direct or co-direct one of the Shakespearean productions, either with the middle or high schoolers. This position is assisted by one dedicated teaching assistant, a college/graduate student who is studying both theatre and education.

Teaching assistants
Dates needed: July 2 through August 10, with a few scattered days in May/June for meetings/orientation

We are also seeking 4 highly qualified college students for a rewarding and rigorous teaching assistant experience. Students with both theatrical and educational experiences should apply. Those who wear multiple hats and may be looking for production experience, as stage managers, designers, assistant directors and more, are encouraged to apply. Production opportunities will be made available for teaching assistants with ability in these realms in addition to their teaching experiences.

In Baltimore for nearly a decade, the Young Actors Academy provides comprehensive training to students grades 3 through 12 in a fun, safe, and creative environment. The academy stretches students imaginations and skills while ensuring that their summer also be a time to 'be a kid' - exploring through play. Students in the lower school are taught basic/interactive play writing and directing, and gain a strong sense of devised work alongside theatre basics. Middle and high school students go through a wide array of classes, including acting methods, stage combat, stage make-up, Commedia, audition techniques, voice, movement for actors, improvisational comedy, acting for television and film, and more. They also have a comprehensive class in methods, and rehearse a full Shakespearean piece, to be performed in the round.
