Being in the ensemble of Carmen was probably one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had in my life as a theatre artist thus far. If you ever get the opportunity to be in an opera, I strongly encourage you to go for it by all means!
The struggle to maintain academic integrity is one that every student faces in their life, simply by nature of being human. But what exactly does academic integrity look like for students pursuing education in more artistic, creative fields, like theatre?
Next time you find yourself required to work on a backstage crew, I encourage you to view the experience as a valuable opportunity to become a more well-rounded practitioner of the arts and a more well-rounded person.
Though it may currently feel like you’re drowning in work and you have no will to continue, don’t let the stress of the moment let you lose sight of why you came to college in the first place, and how proud you will be when you finish.
Though we may have different preferences when it comes to the live content we consume, we are all deeply connected by the human desire to gather, engage with, and be a part of something greater, whether that takes place in a theatre or a stadium, in the wings offstage or the service level beneath the court.
When I look back at the chaotic first half of the semester, I am proud of myself for managing to balance such a busy schedule full of rehearsals, weekend work shifts, and a heavy course load full of countless class projects. Here are some tips and tools that have helped me get through the year so far!

The first few weeks of the spring semester probably make up my least favorite time of year. You have to battle homesickness, force yourself to wake up early again, get used to a new class schedule, and face the fact that you won’t get another break for the next 3 months—all while it’s freezing cold outside and pitch dark by 5pm. It’s a tough time— but thankfully it’s only temporary!
