Andrew Newman recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Journalism. He has written for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Rake, and City Pages, among others. While his written work has often focused on the business world and the film world, he has been a faithful theatergoer ever since seeing a production of "The Sound of Music" at age 6. We all have problems with our parents. Once Mom and Dad reach a certain age, the one thing everyone can agree on is that the parents drive us crazy. It's often been a topic in some of our most popular books, movies, and plays - some of them are great, some not-so-great. Others like Tina Howe's PAINTING CHURCHS, which opened Friday at the Park Square Theatre, are stuck firmly in the middle. Not bad, but not compelling enough to be great.

In celebration of MACBETH, the Guthrie Theater's 50th production of a Shakespeare play, the Theater today launched a new section of its website devoted entirely to Shakespeare at the Guthrie. The site, www.guthrietheater.org/shakespeare, contains cast lists, photos, video, play guides and more, and is designed to serve as a resource for theatergoers, artists, scholars and educators.

Anyone walking into a production of Shakespeare's MACBETH should expect it to be a bloody affair. After all, it's one of his most gruesome plays - dark and weird and violent. Its newest incarnation at the Guthrie (the 50th Shakespeare production overall) doesn't falter on any of these; it's a taut and thrilling rendition of one of the Bard's most compelling works.

The Guthrie and Mu Performing Arts today announced that actor Randy Reyes will star in the Mu production of the Obie Award-winning play YELLOW FACE by David Henry Hwang, directed by Rick Shiomi. The production, proudly presented by the Guthrie, marks the second of three works by Hwang - all of which feature Reyes in leading roles - to be presented in the Twin Cities during the 2009-10 season. Reyes' performance as DHH, Hwang's alter-ego in YELLOW FACE, is bookended by his appearance in Mu's recent production of Hwang's new adaptation of FLOWER DRUM SONG, and his upcoming appearance as Song Liling in the Guthrie's production of M. BUTTERFLY.
