Families are invited to participate in an adventure through the nooks and crannies of the iconic Theatres Building (the spire building) in Upsidedowninsideout, a site-specific work by One Step at a Time Like This commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne. From 20-25 January children aged 6 to 12 and their families will be given the chance to journey through the labyrinth that is Arts Centre Melbourne.

Created by award-winning contemporary theatre group one step at a time like this and with an interactive storybook as a guide, participants follow clues and instructions to discover hidden pathways as they search for the secret at the heart of the building. With book in hand, children lead parents and family members through front and back of house, discovering secret rooms full of sound, peculiar spaces, and films. It is an adventureexisting somewhere between a children's book, a self-guided tour, an installation and a puzzle, with walking, sound, films ... and biscuits!

The guiding quest(ion) posed by the creators is how to turn a monumental building on its head - to transform what may appear as an imposing institution into a place where children feel special, essential, and that they have a unique knowledge of and familiarity with a very public space.

One Step at a Time Like This is an award winning group of Melbourne artists who make immersive, mobile and site responsive theatre. The connective nature of the works reflects the company's interest in engaging audience members to create their own artistic 'journey.' Their work is informed, above all, by an emphasis on relationships - between people, and qualities of space and time.

Upsidedowninsideout is the first children's theatre piece for one step at a time like this. Their previous works include nowhere, Going Nowhere Festival, Arts House, (November 2014); Since I Suppose, Melbourne Festival & Arts House (October 2014) and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre World Stage Series (September 2014);

The acclaimed theatre company has previously won Best Theatre Production Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Best Live Art Award, Melbourne Fringe Festival and City of Melbourne Arts & Participation Program Commission, Green Room Award - Site Specific Production.
