July update, and August at The Butterfly Club. It all kicks off with ABC TV to broadcast Songs From the Middle

The Melbourne Cabaret Festival is thrilled to announce an encore performance of Songs From the Middle on Monday 26 July 2010 at the South Melbourne Town Hall.
Interest from ABC TV together with an overwhelming response in ticket sales has meant that a new show has been added. ABC TV Artscape will be filming the performance on Monday 26 July as part of their documentary on the making of this new work to be broadcast nationally later in the year.
Songs From the Middle, a new song cycle has been commissioned by the Australian National Academy of Music and presented in partnership with the inaugural Melbourne Cabaret Festival.
Songs From the Middle features Eddie Perfect, vocalist; Iain Grandage, Music Director; UK based Brodsky Quartet and Musicians of the Academy.

First sold out show
Less than two weeks to go, and we have our first sold out show.

Vaudevillian extravaganza The Petticoat Soiree yesterday sold out its Friday 23 July performance, becoming the first sell-out show in the Melbourne Cabaret Festival. A handful of tickets remain for their opening night show on Thursday 22. You'll need to act fast to secure your seats to their sizzling world of decadence and razzle dazzle, where the bizarre runs rampant.
Today may be your last chance to grab tickets to the Festival opening Gala, with only 15 seats remaining for a star-studded performance hosted by Alan Brough.
Many other shows are heading for sell-out seasons - thank you Melbourne for embracing this new festival!

August at The Butterfly Club

The Melbourne Cabaret Festival has returned our keys and we're now firmly back in charge of the City's most eclectic venue.

August is ladies month at The Butterfly Club, which doesn't mean $3 spritzers but does mean an entire month dedicated to all manner of feminine charms.

These include Jim Beam drinking Shazza from Broady; the untold story of music theatre star Chelsea Gibb; Emma Dean's captivating, magical world where live pop music meets physical-theatre; Fiona Claire's beautiful and absurd world of a housewife with an artistic temperament, and Suzanne Hobson's twisted, darkly comical originals and interpretation of familiar songs of lost love, betrayal and obsession, played coquettishly in a dark cabaret style.

Cocktail of the month:

‘The Kaleidoscope,' in honour of the marvellously diverse career of Chelsea Gibb, performing Thursday 5 August to Sunday 8 August.

Looking ahead

Mic Conway returns to dazzle Melbourne from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 September.

What is This Thing Called...?

A collection of songs about that most popular of songwriters' subjects. The songs are mainly drawn from theatre shows, particularly those by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber. They are sometimes witty, sometimes sad, sometimes caustic, sometimes tender but always about ... LOVE.

Comments from prior sold-out season:

‘Bronwyn was effervescent! I loved her light hearted funny songs, and she moved me to tears with her ballads. She has brought musical theatre back to life for me. Thanks Bronwyn!'
