THE MYSTERIES: GENESIS Hits Sydney Theatre Company 20 November To 19 December
By: Reynard Loki
In their first Main Stage production, Sydney Theatre Company's permanent ensemble of actors, The Residents, present stories from the big dawn; the Creation, the Fall, the Expulsion from Eden, Cain and Abel and Noah's Ark. The Mysteries: Genesis reflects the theatrical origins of the medieval Mystery plays as popular spectacles produced by tradesmen's guilds. The production is at Wharf 2 from 20 November, directed by Matthew Lutton, STC's Co Artistic Director Andrew Upton and Associate Director Tom Wright.
Playwrights Hilary Bell and Lally Katz have taken stories from the first nine chapters of the bible. The three-part promenade production is performed in a specially reconfigured Wharf 2 designed by Alice Babidge, drawing inspiration from the old courtyards, bear-baiting pits, cloisters and coaching inns of the medieval world, but squarely placed in a contemporary world. The Residents came together in June 2009 and occupy a central role in the day-today operations of Sydney Theatre Company across all aspects of the Company's creative output. As well as occasional Main Stage shows, they also work within the Company's Next Stage, Back Stage and Education streams, moving regularly between these different areas with a particular emphasis on developing new work.Directors: Matthew Lutton, Andrew Upton and Tom Wright.
