QPAC Sets Chamber Music for Each Sunday this Season

By:

How would you like to spend your Sunday afternoons inspired by the words of Shakespeare, uplifted by the music of the great composers and entertained by Australian and internationally acclaimed soloists?

With the 2014 Southern Cross Soloists season and Kawai Piano Series presented on Sunday afternoons at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) during 2014, you can!

This year, Brisbane's own Southern Cross Soloists will present three concerts, commencing on Sunday 30 March with Kiss Me, Katharina. This concert will showcase the sublime voice of Australian tenor, Alexander Lewis, and the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble exploring the story of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.

The next concert in the series, Virtuoso, on Sunday 15 June will see international violin sensation and first Concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic, Ilya Konovalov join the soloists performing work inspired by one of literature's most recognisable legends, Faust, including Wieniawski's Faust Fantasy.

Travels of a Trickster rounds out the series for the Southern Cross Soloists on Sunday 26 October, taking audiences on a journey through Germany, Italy, Bohemia, Greece and Argentina with celebrated Scottish classical accordion virtuoso James Crabb.

The popular Kawai Piano Series will feature two not-to-be missed Sunday afternoon concerts at QPAC in 2014. The first, Happy Birthday Pam! on Sunday 6 April sees Australia's much loved and revered husband and wife duo pianists Pamela Page and Max Olding performing together in celebration of Pam's 80th birthday.

This year, Pam takes on what is arguably Liszt's greatest musical work, the mighty Sonata in B minor - one of the most dazzling and impressive virtuosic works in the piano repertoire. As well as the Liszt sonata, this delightful program also includes the composer's most famous and popular Hungarian Rhapsody and Mozart's sublime Sonata for Two Pianos.

Four Hands follows on Sunday 3 August with Kawai Series curator Stephen Emmerson reuniting on the Concert Hall stage with friend and colleague Bernard Lanskey from the Singapore Conservatorium, performing Schumann, Schubert and Schultz.

As an extra incentive, subscribe before Sunday 30 March to a concert package of a Southern Cross Soloists (2 or 3 concert package), a Kawai Piano Series 2 concert package, or a combination of both, and you will go in the draw to win two tickets to Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic Broadway musical The King & I in QPAC's Lyric Theatre and an overnight stay for two at Oaks Charlotte Towers.
