Periscope Productions' A LITTLE BIT OF PAIN NEVER HURT ANYONE Comes to The Butterfly Club

Melbourne-based indie theatre company Periscope Productions's new play for puppets and people comes to The Butterfly Club before heading off on tour.

In 'A Little Bit of Pain Never Hurt Anyone' a boy and a girl who meet in a sandpit try to learn how to be strong independent women. As Jess and Billy grow up together, they come up against a world trying to tell them that the only way to be happy is to perform the roles they were assigned at birth. Joyful and sad in equal measure, this play combines the weird worlds of Lally Katz with the theatrical inventiveness of Caryl Churchill. It will move anyone who has ever felt trapped by the way young Australian men and women are instructed on how to love themselves and others.

Periscope Productions have been making work together for five years, in backyards, living rooms - anywhere they feel needs a bit of magic to liven up the everyday. This is their first touring original work.

Director Ben Sheen says "It's really exciting to be producing new work from inside our company. Brendan's writing is fresh and funny - full of childhood nostalgia - and heartache that will punch you in the gut."

Playwright Raimondo Cortese says, "Brendan McDougall's brilliant new play - bristles with imaginative flair and eviscerating honesty as its two characters play out unconscious traumas that lie buried in their past. Through searing shifts in dialogue, the characters condense life experience into an exhilarating sixty minutes of drama."

'A Little Bit of Pain Never Hurt Anyone' will be on at the The Butterfly Club from the 7th-11th of February 2018. With fertility, footballs, and dads both dead and dying, this two-decade love story captured in 55 minutes is not to be missed.
