Darebin Arts' Speakeasy Announces Winter/Spring Season

Darebin City Council's Northcote Town Hall solidifies itself as a thriving hub of independent theatre with the announcement of Speakeasy's Winter/Spring season.

A celebration of cutting-edge performance from around Australia, Speakeasy's second half-year season for 2014 runs from August - November and features the critically-acclaimed Belvoir production Coranderrk starring Jack Charles, transforms into a thriving festival hub during the Melbourne Fringe Festival and presents Melbourne Festival's flagship indie offering The Trouble with Harry by MKA.

"In a year and a half, the Speakeasy program has grown and flourished into a legitimate home for cutting-edge performing arts in Melbourne's north," said Vanessa Pigrum, Darebin Arts Program Manager. "Since its inception in January 2013, the Speakeasy program of independent theatre has presented 30 productions, including 24 world-premieres. In the second half of 2014, we are pleased and excited to be partnering for the first time with Belvoir in Sydney and our city's own Melbourne Festival to bring world-class theatre to the Darebin and greater Melbourne community."

Direct from a critically-acclaimed season at Belvoir Theatre in Sydney, Coranderrk will play Northcote Town Hall from Friday 15 - Sunday 24 August, 2014, in a Melbourne premiere season exclusive to Darebin Arts' Speakeasy program of independent theatre. Inspired by transcripts from an 1881 parliamentary inquiry between Indigenous landowners and the Aboriginal Protection Board over the Coranderrk Station (outside present-day Healesville), an ensemble cast of Australia's best Indigenous actors, including Coranderrk descendant and Green Room Lifetime Achievement Award-recipient Jack Charles, will shed light on this forgotten struggle in Australian history.
