BWW Review: A PERFECT LIFE is a touching new musical with potential.
by Lacey Cannon Gonzales - September 08, 2017
A PERFECT LIFE is presented by Austin Theatre Project as part of its 2017 season. This world premiere is based on the musical, One Man Band by Tony and Emmy Award winner Larry Hochman, Marc Elliot, and James Lecesne. The original One Man Band enjoyed a well-received New York run in 1985. Original composers Larry Hochman and Marc Elliot, who is also the show's lyricist, have teamed up with playwright Laurie Hochman, to tell this bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful story of life, love, and loss.

BWW Review: Jason Phelps Charms in TITLE AND DEED
by Frank Benge - September 05, 2017
TITLE AND DEED has much the same structure as playwright Will Eno's brilliant Thom Pain, but what it doesn't have, is the same degree of anger. Instead, this solo performance piece is a sharply funny meditation on life in all of its absurd glory. In ways, it seems the sole character, Man (brilliantly essayed by Jason Phelps), is a visitor, perhaps not just to this locale but maybe even to this planet.
BWW Review: THE UNDERSTUDY Features a Trio of Stellar Performances
by Frank Benge - September 05, 2017
When you choose a three-person show it doesn't leave you much room for error or less than stellar acting. The current Southwest Theatre Productions company of Nicholas Kier, Devin Finn and Kristin Chiles under the direction of Joni Lorraine delivers nothing short of perfection, each character has been crafted to show without artifice or contrivance their specific needs and emotional depth. These performers show us abrasive tempers buffeted by discoveries, in Theresa Rebeck's unusual modern theatrical hybrid of drama and comedy.

BWW Review: TWENTYEIGHT a Fascinating Look at Dystopian Racist Space
by Frank Benge - August 26, 2017
TWENTYEIGHT, a 2014 play by Tyler English-Beckwith, is a look at eight laborers who are trying to finish the shuttle that will carry them to the Liberian Space Station. This Space Station (also known as the L.S.S.) is a refuge for people of color. It seems that in this very Dystopian future, things, for people of color, are even more violent and oppressive than things are now. This, as an audience member, isn't very comforting. Indeed, this is a short oppressive theatrical experience you aren't likely to forget easily. The world we know is long gone. A rubble of ruins. People of Color have been crammed into settlements, where they work on projects just like this shuttle. What keeps them at work are the faceless Enforcers and a distant dream of liberation. There is the pull and allure of that promised place where what is wrong magically becomes a place of blessings, joys and riches. Isn't that, after all, the promise of all regions? Your heaven in amongst the various heavens.

BWW Review: ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE at Georgetown Palace Theatre Leaves You Humming All The Way Home
by Joni Lorraine - August 24, 2017
As I hear it, The Palace in Georgetown was due to produce Grease in the spot where LOVE ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE resides now. All I'll say about that is, thank goodness it worked out this way! This production is adorable and entertaining from start to finish. I smiled through most of the show, and even leaned into the fairly loose premise. Story line is not the intent of most jukebox musicals, but this one fared relatively well in the hands of its Director/Musical Director/Conductor/Bassist Lannie Hiboldt. Lannie also did the set design. Generally, this could be seen as overextending one's self, but it Lannie's case, it worked out nicely.

BWW Review: CHICAGO at The City Theatre Lacks the Razzle Dazzle
by Scott Shipman - August 21, 2017
CHICAGO opened at The City Theatre this past weekend, and despite the fact that the show can work well in a small, minimalistic setting I am very sorry that I have to say that for me the potential for this production is clear, but the execution is lacking.
