galerie102 Presents Allie Pohl's IDEAL WOMAN
galerie102 presents selections fromAllie Pohl's Ideal Woman series, which question society's obsession and commercial quest for perfection-taking on the ultimate purveyor of commercial femininity: Barbie. Barbie's torso becomes the touchstone of a greater reevaluation of societal constructs of perfection: unwanted hair, impossible body standards, and what it means to be an 'ideal' woman. At stake are deeply imbedded cultural values dictated to women on a daily basis-mostly through the media barrage-as to what one must attain and maintain to be an 'Ideal Woman.' Pohl's show has received critical acclaim from Claudia Pardo: "Chutzpah is often underrated, and Pohl has it. [She] leverages a very serious matter: society's enduring perpetuation of the feminine from an unrealistic point of view, with work that is playful and accessible. Pohl's work is refreshingly bold in an "I don't care what you think" manner, but it also has a very sweet component, which makes it almost irresistible."
