York Theatre Co. to Present Documentary on Foster Jenkins

The York Theatre Company has announced the return of Florence Foster Jenkins to its theatre--this time in a documentary film by producer Donald Collup, entitled Florence Foster Jenkins: A World of Her Own.  

The special premiere presentation will take place on Tuesday, April 10th  at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Theatre at St. Peter's, 54th Street (between Lexington and 3rd Avenues).  Admission is $10 at the door. For reservations, call 212-935-5824 x 21.  Following the showing will be an audience discussion with the filmmaker will be held.

"Jenkins, known for her unique operatic stylings, was featured in York's Mainstage production Souvenir, by Stephen Temperley, which transferred to Broadway last season. Collup has amassed an extensive collection of information, memorabilia and personal accounts from those in the know, including images from her career, press clippings and magazine articles, recorded interviews of people who knew her as well.  The documentary also includes live interviews with those who saw her in concert--including musical legend Marge Champion--and excerpts from the nine recordings Jenkins made," according to York Theatre notes.

"Collup has purposefully set out not to make fun of this legendary cult figure; he feels her story is fascinating and entertaining enough by itself. And in telling this never-before-told tale, he feels that many of the questions about her can finally be addressed."

Souvenir premiered at The York Theatre Company and ran from December, 2004 to January, 2005 and then transferred to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre from October, 2005 to January, 2006. Judy Kaye starred as Madam Jenkins and was the recipient of a Drama League Citation, and nominations for a Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk and Tony Awards.
