Women's History Month Celebrations In March Come to The Staten Island Children's Museum

The Staten Island Children's Museum will celebrate Women's History Month in March with special STEAM-themed programs that will be hands-on and fun for all.

The month's ShopRite Kidz Cook sessions will show visitors how make their own dishes inspired by Irish chefs Catherine Fulvio, Clodagh McKenna and Jess Murphy, who create delicious new takes on traditional favorites. Sessions are on Fridays at 3:00 & 4:00. Tickets will be available at the front desk.

Visitors will create their own puppets inspired by the work of Brooklyn-based writer, performer and "Food Party" TV show host Thu Tran in the March Weekend Art Studio, open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Oceanographer and biologist Sylvia Earle is the focus on Friday, March 8 as the Staten Island Children's Museum celebrates International Women's Day. Young scientists will join a simulated oil spill clean-up project and learn about Earle's dedication to preserving ocean life. The workshop begins at 2:00 pm.

"Staten Island Women in Science" will present the month's Con Edison Second Saturday Science! workshop on Saturday, March 9 from Noon - 1:00 pm. These female biologists and ecologists from Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden will lead participants in a variety of hands-on demonstrations related to their fieldwork.

It's time to recognize "Women in Mathematics" on Pi Day on Thursday, March 14 at 4:00 pm. Visitors will hear about the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, the only woman to win a Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in Mathematics. They will also be treated to a slice of pizza pie, courtesy of Paulie's Pizzeria (while supplies last).

Photographer Alice Austen's birthday will be celebrated at the Staten Island Children's Museum on Saturday, March 16 during the special "Photos and Portraits" photography workshops led by the Alice Austen House at 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Timed tickets will be available at the front desk.

More Special Events in March
On Saturday, March 9, local youth pipe band Celtic Cross Pipes & Drums will perform traditional Irish music to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The performance starts at 3:00 pm.

The Staten Island Children's Museum will once again partner with the GRACE Foundation of New York to bring its second "Sensory Friendly Family Fun Night" to children ages 5 - 11 who are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. The event on Thursday, March 21 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm includes an art activity and specially-designed experiences in the hands-on exhibits. A light dinner will be served. Tickets are $6 per person and must be purchased in advance - only a limited number of tickets will be sold. The Staten Island Reading Association returns to the Staten Island Children's Museum on Saturday, March 23 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Sabrina Panfilo, author of children's books Tomey and the Caterpillar and Our Special Fish Dish Wish will share a reading. Visitors will be treated to a performance by local musician Gary Moore; arts and crafts activities; and special give-a-ways (while supplies last).

"Keeping to our mission of making STEAM-based learning engaging and fun, our young visitors will get to see first-hand the contributions of women in the fields of science, art and math."
