The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy to Host SHULS OF GRANDEUR Tour This Fall

By: Sep. 03, 2015

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy will present SHULS OF GRANDEUR, a walking tour which will visit two grand synagogues remaining on the Lower East Side on October 12, 2015 (Columbus Day).

One is the first great house of worship built by Eastern European Jews, and the other a former church, believed to be a site on the Underground Railroad.

We will start our tour at the Bialystoker Synagogue, the largest active congregation on the Lower East Side today, covered in murals, showcasing Tiffany inspired glass windows. From there we will walk down historic East Broadway discussing the Educational Alliance, The Henry Street Settlement, Seward Park (the first municipal park in the country), Straus Square, and much more. View Beth Hamedrash Hagadol, the nation's oldest Orthodox Jewish Russian congregation, and the site of the only Chief Rabbi ever in America.

The last stop will be at the Museum at Eldridge Street, located in the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue, which stands as a tribute to immigrant's faith in America. We will end the tour with a little snack. Learn how Jewish traditions are being carried on at these sites today.

This tour is being offered jointly by The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy & the Museum at Eldridge Street. Time: 10:45 AM (Lasts approximately 3 hours.) Significant amount of walking. This tour meets in front of Abrons Art Center, 466 Grand Street (between Pitt Street & BialystokerPl/Willett Street) Tickets are $22 per person, pre-registration required as capacity is limited for this tour. Tickets can be purchased at www.nycjewishtours.org/Calendar.htm#101215a.
