The College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present a First Friday open house exhibiting student work from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5.

Among the exhibitions will be “Drawesome,” an interdisciplinary profile of charcoal drawings from the Visual Literacy Lab: Perceptual Drawing. This exhibition will feature the observational drawing of students from Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Textiles, Clothing and Design, and Fine Art.

Also on display is "Synergy Pod" a project from the class ARCH410 Architectural Design: Tectonics. “Synergy Pod” includes three-dimensional models of student-designed temporary dwellings built on and transported to a location by semi-trailers.

Visual Literacy adjunct professor Chip Stanley describes the “Drawesome” exhibition as the outcome of the studio focusing on “drawing as a way to see and gain knowledge about the world. The students are learning to see three-dimensional form and space through drawing and then developing the skills to communicate that knowledge through drawing. We see and then we say,”  Stanley said. Visual Literacy at UNL is a Program of Excellence and benefits by partial support from the Office of Academic Affairs which provides funding to grow academic programs into national prominence.

“Synergy Pod” is a small-scale systems integration project with intensive hybrid programming. Assistant Professor BrIan Kelly asked fourth-year architecture students to design a pod to be located on a semi-trailer facilitating short-term living for events such as festivals or sporting events, or deployed for needs such as disaster relief. The pod design was to be self-sufficient in generating its own ventilation, lighting and power, as well it was to collect water for reuse. Final models represent a slice section through the proposed design.

Additionally, a public tour of the historic College of Architecture will start at 6:30 p.m. Tour participants will learn about the history of Architecture Hall, hear interesting facts and stories about the building and understand what the College students do within their majors.

The exhibition and tour are free and open to the public.
