The Chartreuse String Trio to Feature in By The Water Concert

Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) is pleased to continue their free concert series with By The Water, a program that shines a light on the music of women composers performed by the Chartreuse String Trio. the Chartreuse String Trio, features BSM violin/viola faculty member Carrie Frey, joined by violinist Myra Hinrichs and cellist Helen Newby. This free concert on January 12, 2018 at 7:00 pm will be held at the David Greer Recital Hall at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street (off of Broadway) in Manhattan. Admission is FREE and seating is limited.

With By the Water, the Chartreuse String Trio performs music by women composers that explore water in its various forms and other elements of the natural world. From the dark murmurs of Bethany Younge's composition written at a New Hampshire lake, to Kaija Saariaho's musical portrait of clouds in the French Alps. The program features two pieces commissioned by Chartreuse: Bethany Younge's trio, and Leah Asher's "Let me know what you find.," alongside works by well-known composers Kaija Saariaho, Rebecca Clarke, and Pauline Oliveros.

About the Chartreuse String Trio

Chartreuse is violinist Myra Hinrichs (Chicago), violist Carrie Frey (New York City), and cellist Helen Newby (San Francisco). The tricoastal trio aims to take advantage of the distance by pooling the strengths of their chosen cities, commissioning new works from composers across the U.S. and in Norway and collaborating with fellow performers in each of their musical residences on "Chartreuse +/-" projects. The trio has toured extensively in the U.S. Northeast, the Midwest, and California, as well as in Norway.

Uniquely devoted to repeat performances and developing the string trio repertoire through adventurous commissions, Chartreuse has premiered works by Kurt Isaacson, Peter Swendsen, Katherine Young, Marek Poliks, Bethany Younge, David Bird, Tyler Futrell, and Aaron Holloway-Nahum, among others. Cleveland Classical described the trio's performance of Isaacson's work as "a maelstrom almost tactile in its grittiness."

Helen, Myra, and Carrie are devoted educators in each of their cities of residence. As a trio they have given performances and workshops for students of all ages at institutions including SUNY Fredonia, Oberlin College's Winter Term Chamber Music Intensive, the Norges Musikkhøgskole in Oslo, Toneheim Folkehøgskole, Tromsø University, and Kendal at Oberlin.

The trio has been invited for four consecutive years to develop new repertoire in residencies at Avaloch Farm Music Festival. This season, they will join the premiere Barnes Ensemble, performing with members of the JACK Quartet; tour the West Coast with the Permutations Series; debut at the Arts Club of Chicago; record their first full album; and tour the East Coast from New York and Lancaster, PA to Georgia.
