Pop/Rock Songs For Your Next Audition

As theatres open and audition notices begin to roll out, you might notice the increase in pop/rock song requests for musical theatre. Once upon a time, Rent was THE rock show on Broadway. Now, pop/rock musicals make up a vast majority of Broadway shows. From Jagged Little Pill to Six, this style of musical theatre is rapidly growing in popularity. Here are a few pop/rock songs for your next audition. I chose the songs based on range, storytelling, and style. This list is for all voice types and genders.

Starman- David Bowie

An alternative to Life on Mars by David Bowie, which has become popular since Sophia Anne Caruso's rendition in Lazarus.

If It Makes You Happy- Sheryl Crow

An alternative to You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette. Angry teen belting vibes. There are so many different ways to act this song! I

End It On This- No Doubt

Rich chest voice. Smaller range to work with, but I hope you have great breath support. Varies in tempo which can act as an aid to your acting. What if each tempo shift is a new beat?

I Kissed A Girl- Katy Perry

Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox has a wonderful cover of this one. Another great acting song that leans into the "pop" in "pop/rock."

The Edge of Glory- Lady Gaga

Big voice belt OR make it soft and slow. Find your own interpretation of the song to compliment your never ending range.

Should've Said No- Taylor Swift

Lots of room for runs if that's your jam. A less "angry belt" song choice.

Fallin'- Alicia Keys

Another one for runs. If you have one of those magical voices where there is no break, show it off with this song.

Domino- Jessie J

Make this song fit your voice. Opt up or down: I'd love to hear and alto own this song.

No matter what song you choose for your audition this season, make it yours! Break a leg!
