Spicy Witch Productions Announces Dream Season

Spicy Witch Productions announces its 2018 season. SWP 2018 Writer-in-Residence Iris Dauterman's world premiere play, Merrily, Merrily, will run in repertory with Life Is But a Dream, Shawn Morgenlander's fresh translation of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's La vida es sueño. Spicy Witch's sixth repertory season explores family dynamics, forgiveness, and the gray area between dreams and reality.

Merrily, Merrily, inspired by de la Barca's Spanish Golden Age classic, is set in a world where international adoption morphs into isolation and clinical diagnoses. Centered around a family struggling to reconnect despite prolonged estrangement, Ms. Dauterman's play dives into the gulf between internal perception and external expression.

Shawn Morgenlander's Life Is But a Dream, cleverly translated from Spanish verse to modern English, streamlines a dizzying array of estranged relatives, unfulfilled prophecies, and struggles for succession into a hilarious and heartfelt fable of female moxie. Ms. Morgenlander is Spicy Witch's first commissioned translator. Together, Ms. Dauterman's and Ms. Morgenlander's plays will probe the recesses of our self-constructed bubbles and encourage us to judge the subjectivity of our own perceptions.

Merrily, Merrily is directed by Victoria Teague; Life Is But a Dream is directed by Anaïs Koivisto. The ensemble repertory cast includes Nick Bombicino*, Patrick Chang, Veronique Jeanmarie, Katie Rose Krueger*, Dani Martineck, Isabelle Russo, and Stephen Zuccaro.

The production team includes Frances Swanson (Production Stage Manager), Emily Rosenkrantz (Production Manager), Caitlynn Barrett (Set Designer), Yi-Chung Chen (Lighting Designer), Carsen Joenk (Sound Designer), Megan McQueeney (Props Designer), and Noelle Quanci (Costume Designer).

Spicy Witch Productions explores gender and identity through the pairing of classical and contemporary plays in repertory. Dedicated to creating roles for women on and offstage, SWP aims to help close the gender gap in theater and to use the conversation between classical and contemporary text to initiate a dialogue and be a catalyst for social change. Spicy Witch Productions was founded in 2013 and is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas. These productions are Equity Approved Showcases. An asterisk next to an actor's name denotes that they are a member of Actors' Equity Association.

Merrily, Merrily runs April 6 at 7:30pm (followed by an Opening Night Party), April 10, 12, and 14 at 8 pm, and April 7 and 15 at 2pm. Life Is But a Dream runs April 7, 11, and 13 at 8pm and April 8 and 14 at 2pm. Performances on April 8, 10, and 11 will be followed by a post-show talk back with the cast and crew. Flamboyan Theater at The Clemente 107 Suffolk Street New York NY 10002. Tickets are $20 per show or $30 for both. Tickets and info available at www.spicywitchproductions.com
