In 1959, GYPSY - a new musical with a book from Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics from Stephen Sonheim - opened at the Broadway Theatre, led by Ethel Merman as Rose. It closed after 702 performances, but some of the best and brightest leading ladies took on Rose in the years to come: Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone all led Broadway revivals of GYPSY; many regional productions as well as two notable film versions and more have all put the spotlight on talented women taking on the iconic role.

GYPSY has been nominated for a total of twenty-eight Tony Awards throughout the years and is the winner of six, including Best Revival of a Musical in 1989. The production's Grammy Award-winning score includes Let Me Entertain You, Some People, and Everything's Coming Up Roses.

Some People has become a standard of musical theatre, and a new YouTube video shows many of the most brilliant interpretations of the song in one place. We've NEVER had so many readers send us the same Stage Tube suggestion in a single day, so we're sharing it now!
