Hello and welcome to BWW's ON THIS DAY Series! Please read along as, each day, we celebrate birthdays, shows' openings and all kinds of theatrical events that have happened on this date.

Today would have been pop icon Freddie Mercury's 70th birthday. Though known largely for his compositions and vocals for Queen, Mercury also had a solo career and played for various other bands. His music is perhaps best known to our readers through his colleague Brian May's musical theatre adaptation of their work - "We Will Rock You". Mercury was known for his vibrant, exciting stage manner and great vocal prowess.

A victim of the 1980s AIDS epidemic, Mercury died in 1991. To honour him today, here's a fun, beautiful reminder of his talent.
