New York Post Theatre Columnist Michael Riedel was among the first round of honorees announced for this year's Pulitzer Prize, winning the award for distinguished work in journalism.

"The award for journalism has never gone to a gossip columnist before," says Joann Byrd, Co-Chair of the Pulitzer Prize Board, "but we feel that Michael Riedel has elevated newspaper gossip to extraordinary levels with his blending of fact, speculation, superior theatre knowledge and a depraved indifference for the careers of Broadway artists."

When contacted for comment via cell phone, Riedel replied, "'bout time.  Now if you'll excuse me I have to go make sure A Catered Affair doesn't win any Tonys."
