Back in February, BWW reported that Sally Field may be coming back to Broadway for yet another revival of the Tennessee Williams' classic THE GLASS MENAGERIE. According to the report, the actress would play Amanda Wingfield, a role which she took on in 2004 at the KENNEDY Center. Tony Winner Sam Gold is attached to direct the production.

Today, Page Six reveals that Gold, "wants someone with an actual disability" to play the role of Laura and that they're hoping Joe Mantello may take on the role of Tom. This would make the seventh time the drama was produced on Broadway.

Mantello is perhaps best known for his work on Broadway productions of Wicked, Take Me Out and Assassins, as well as earlier in his career being one of the original Broadway cast of Angels in America. Onstage, he recently starred in the Tony winning revival of The Normal Heart.

THE GLASS MENAGERIE was most recently staged in 2013. Directed by John Tiffany, the production starred Cherry Jones as Amanda Wingfield, stage and screen star Zachary Quinto as Tom, three-time Tony-nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger as Laura, and Brian J. Smith as Jim, the Gentleman Caller.

In The Glass Menagerie, Amanda Wingfield is a southern belle past her prime, living with two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis. Amanda dreams of a better life for her shy and crippled daughter Laura, and so she pushes her son Tom to find a "gentleman caller" for the girl. However, the arrival of the gentleman caller sends shockwaves through the family, and causes cracks to form in the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.
