The Corinthian is a new play written by Joe McCann and directed by Martin McCormick, co-presented with Assembly Roxy.

Andrew Watson is widely considered to be the first black footballer to play at an international level for Scotland. He was the son of a wealthy Scottish plantation owner and his mother was from British Guiana (now known as Guyana). Watson moved to Scotland as a child and was fascinated by how different things were in Greenock.

Watson thrived playing football with other children and soon made a name for himself in Scottish football, but faced appalling levels of racism. McCann’s writing doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of what he went through, and the language is incredibly jarring to hear.

Dayton Mungai is wonderful as Watson, capturing his wide-eyed innocence as a boy and then his determination as a young man. Andrew Watson was an integral part to Scottish football- he was the first black Captain and watched the first game between Scotland and England but his story is rarely told.

The Corinthian is a much-needed account of an important footballing figure, told with care and enthusiasm.
