Baby One More Time: this one is filled with heart (and sperm)

Review: RELAY at Traverse

Review: RELAY at Traverse ImageAfter a critically acclaimed 'must see' at the Edinburgh Fringe, Leila Navabi brings her solo "punk musical" Relay to the Traverse - this one races ahead with heart and humour.

Based on Navabi's real-life journey to having a baby with her partner using her gay Best Friend's sperm, Relay meshes comedy, live music, projections and giant cardboard cut-outs into an amusing-yet-moving story. Navabi is magnetic - warm, witty and very self-aware. We have moments of absurd comedy and genuine vulnerability, turning what could be a gimmicky concept into something quie beautiful. I laughed, but I also reflected upon the messy realities of love, friendship and modern family-making. Beneath the silliness is a sharply sincere exploration of queer parenthood and the different ways people create connection and belonging.

Funny, heartfelt, odd (in a good way), and just the right length. Highly recommend this one.

Relay was at the Traverse on the 16th of May.
