Review: MARIE AND ROSETTA at Asolo Repertory Theatre

Asolo's new presentation of "MARIE AND ROSETTA" is a delightful celebration of the powerhouse women who shaped musical history. The story takes us back to a funeral home in Mississippi in 1946, where Sister Rosetta Tharpe, known as "The Godmother of Rock & Roll", and Marie Knight come together for an unforgettable partnership. As they practice for their first performance, Sister Rosetta's creativity and innovation shine through, transforming traditional gospel music into something revolutionary.
Through George Brant's writing, these two remarkable women are brought to life, their influence on music legends like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jimi Hendrix highlighted. It's a fascinating journey that showcases the magic that can happen when two talented individuals unite to create something truly special. As we peel back the layers of history, we see how these women shaped the landscape of music and paved the way for future generations of artists to follow in their footsteps.

In her distinctive "High-Church" crossover style, Sister Rosetta, portrayed with vibrant energy by Maiesha McQueen, electrifies the audience with soul-stirring gospel melodies, infusing a sense of jubilation into the profound message she delivers. As McQueen embodies her character with unparalleled zeal, we are transported to new heights of spiritual resonance, where salvation and merriment harmoniously converge. The moment she unveils her electric guitar from a flashy hot-pink velvet case, anticipation for a remarkable performance surged. Meanwhile, Alexis J. Roston, in the role of Marie Knight, artfully navigates a transformation from a rigidly controlled persona to one liberated by spontaneity, gradually demonstrating the harmonious blend of lightheartedness and faith to accompany Sister Rosetta.

The music on stage is just the tip of the iceberg! Larry Brown shredding on guitar, supporting McQueen's epic solos, and Mahmoud Khan on keyboards, turning the funeral home into a full-blown concert with soul-stirring lyrics blending seamlessly with electrifying guitars. In tracks such as "Didn't it Rain?", you can feel the enchanting aura that defines Sister Rosetta's legendary style, a fusion of thrill and raw emotional intensity that laid the foundation for the soul of rock & roll music.

Catch this historically enlightening show - it is an experience! It is also an opportunity to change your perspective and be inspired by the journey through history. Get your tickets now and be prepared to witness an unforgettable event that will stay with you long after the final curtain call.
