Review: BEATLES ON BOARD at Tschauner Bühne

As one of Europe’s famous impromptu theaters with regular performances, the Tschauner Bühne is known far beyond the borders of Ottakring. The 2026 season kicks off with a new CEO. Jürgen Partaj takes over from Monika Erb, who is looking back on ten very successful years. Huge steps to fill for the new man in the lead. On stage, the season opens with a Musical Comedy—or is it a Comedy Musical?

 

In a stolen, dilapidated Soviet aircraft from the 1960s, the three flight attendants, Babette, Jeanette, and Raclette, set a course for Paris—but, to no surprise, there are Tschauner-like circumstances to make it a bumpy and rather entertaining trip. There is an 80-year-old and totally drunk pilot trying to cure his hangover and a co-pilot resting in peace in the overhead bin(s), and, of course, an emergency landing. Ingredients for a disastrous flight trip, or for an amusing evening at Tschauners.

There are rules, regulations, and protocols for handling in-flight emergencies. The Jetbaguette flight attendants came up with a super plan to calm down the cabin: a non-stop “entertainment program”. With more than 20 Beatles songs, the cabin transforms into a stage, their stage. All-time classics like you never heard them before, and might possibly never hear them again. You can waltz, a must in Vienna, or tango; Beatles Hits are timeless and colorful.

 

Ines Hengl-Pirker, Marina Petkov, and Ryta Tale, as the disaster Flight Attendants, are delivering a charming and yet entertaining comedy night out, with all-time classics in a rather unusual fashion. You can sing, you have to move as part of the entertainment program, and you will have a jolly good Tschauner time. A powerhose performance by a powerhorse Dream-team.

Directed by Markus Richter, with choreography by Rita Sereinig, stage design by Petra Fibich-Patzelt, and costumes by Elisabeth Töplitzer, the journey from Vienna's Tschauner Bühne to Paris will be entertaining. Set off with the Tschauner Season and its usual, unique style as the summer begins. Beatles on Board and up up in the Air.
