PHONE BONE: The True Story of My Life as a Phone Sex Operator to make premiers at The Tank Theater's Storytelling 2.0 Festival. By writer and storyteller, Athalie Paynting, opens October 8th at 7pm.

About the Show

Athalie's story takes place in the late 90s when, as a 20-year-old virgin working at a backpacker's hostel in San Diego, she takes a night job as a phone sex operator. She needed the second job for financial reasons, but also for something much darker and more disturbing, which she reveals during the course of the show. She spends three months moonlighting in the phone sex industry and experiences interactions that range from awkwardly absurd, to titillating, to heartwarming, to horrific. In the end, she ends up learning more about herself, her coworkers, and men than she ever expected.

About the Artist

Athalie Paynting is a former Semi-Pro Wrestler turned Sales Executive. In other words, she is one hell of a BAD BITCH. She is a two-time Moth Story Slam winner and has been a featured storyteller at "Yums The Word," "Sideshow Goshkow," "Adam Wade from NH Show," "A Very Special Episode," "Surprise Stories," "Whatever Happened to the Nerds," "Tell It Brooklyn." She has also been a guest on "Stripped Stories" and "Modern Stories" podcasts. She enjoys miniature food and fine cigars. Miles Davis made fun of her once. Athalie lives in Brooklyn and is currently writing her first novel.

About The Tank Theatre

The Tank is a non-profit arts presenter serving emerging artists engaged in the pursuit of new ideas and forms of expression. They serve over 1,000 artists every year in over 350 performances, and work across all disciplines, including theater, comedy, dance, film, music, public affairs, and storytelling. The Tank's goal is to foster an environment of inclusiveness and remove the burden of cost from the creation of new work for artists launching their careers and experimenting within their art form. The heart of the theatre's services is providing free performance space in the 62-seat blackbox that we operate in Manhattan, and we also offer a suite of other services such as free rehearsal space, promotional support, and a cut of the box office. We keep ticket prices affordable and view our work as democratic, opening up both the creation and attendance of the arts to all. Since its founding in 2003, artists who have come through The Tank include Alex Timbers, Amy Herzog, Lucy Alibar, Mike Daisey, Reggie Watts, Kyle Abraham, Andrew Bujalski, We Are Scientists, and tens of thousands of others.
