PEREGRINATIONS To Have Premiere at Edinburgh Fringe
The masked physical theatre piece, directed by Blake Habermann, will play Assembly Roxy in Edinburgh.
Dutch Kills Theater Company will present the world premiere of PEREGRINATIONS at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer. The production will run August 6–30 at Assembly Roxy, excluding August 17 and 25.
Conceived by the Long Story Short Devising Ensemble and directed by Blake Habermann, the production uses non-verbal masked physical theatre, puppetry, and an original score to examine migration and displacement through the lived experiences of migrants from around the world.
Created through interviews with migrants, including members of the cast, the piece follows intersecting stories of border crossings, bureaucracy, identity, and survival. The performers wear larval masks inspired by the Swiss Basel Carnival, reflecting identities in a continual state of transformation.
Habermann said the production draws on stories from individuals with connections to the United States, Argentina, Peru, Ghana, Jamaica, Greece, the Dominican Republic, South Africa, the Philippines, Italy, and Ireland, as well as firsthand accounts from migrants who crossed from Mexico to the United States and from Syria to Germany.
“The piece is a poetic synthesis of these collected memories, images and struggles,” Habermann said.
