ONE SUN-ONE MOON Opens 6/25 at Dominique Levy Gallery

By:

Beginning June 25, 2015, Dominique Levy Gallery will present One Sun - One Moon, the first New York solo exhibition for artist Peter Regli.

Regli is best known for his ongoing project, Reality Hacking, a series of temporary and often anonymous actions and interventions in urban public spaces and the natural landscape. Initiated in the 1990s and spanning four continents, Reality Hacking consists of over 300 projects to date, which trace the threads of Surrealism, Land art, and Conceptual art, and rely upon the artist's keen observation and uncanny wit. Resisting any specific style, medium, or material, Regli explores the poetics of banality and the sublimity of everyday objects and remote or abandoned places. Reality Hacking projects are often itinerant, some following objects the artist sets on a journey, while others appear in isolated, unexpected landscapes where they may be encountered by unsuspecting viewers.

One Sun - One Moon at Dominique Le?vy will present a selection of marble objects from Regli's Reality Hacking No. 240 (2007 - present), an ensemble of Buddha and snowman sculptures. Situated in the gallery space as if in conversation, these sacred and totemic personages will carpet the gallery floor in animated pairs and groups. The shared medium of carved marble makes these venerated symbols and folkloric figures appear to have a family resemblance as they meet head-on in a cultural exchange between
East and West.

Also on view in One Sun - One Moon is a series of photographs taken by the artist over the course of his Reality Hacking project. For Regli, photographs are not merely records

of completed projects, but also present ambiguous remnants of often subtle, even imperceptible, alterations to landscape. Some photographs, including an image of Reality Hacking No. 159: Ghost Barn, for example, documents the artist's illumination of the interior of a dilapidated barn near Spokane, Washington, at night, pointing to the eerie presence that persists in isolated, abandoned places. Other photographs appear to be of nondescript places - a small pond or an expanse of desert. However, these places are in fact the geographical centers of various territories, and Regli's images highlight the physical and navigational difficulty of identifying politically significant but topographically unremarkable locations. The photographs on view at Dominique Le?vy follow the peripatetic trend at work in Regli's Reality Hacking, in which the artist designates unlikely sites as sacred for a moment, leaving only ghostly traces of his ephemeral mark.

One Sun - One Moon will be on view at Dominique Le?vy Gallery through August 15, 2015. The exhibition will be accompanied by a 272-page catalogue published by the gallery and designed by An Art Service in collaboration with the artist.
