NewFilmmakers has announced their next film of the month screenings for Wednesday, February 1st.

Leather production is an age-old industry crucial to the national economy, producing a significant quantity of exported goods. Yet in trying to compete globally, the factory owners are challenged by environmental laws as factories face closure. Should one save a river by killing an age-old industry?

COMMENTARY follows nine people as they record a DVD commentary for a film-within-the-film that is never seen, called WASTE. In RASHOMON fashion, the film documents four groups as they record their commentaries: The writer/director of WASTE (Zachary Isaacson) and the film's Oscar-winning star (Alison Fraser), three supporting actors from WASTE (Leslie Kritzer, Gerry McIntyre, and Peter Vack), the producer (Tom Hewitt) and his assistant (Katie Klaus), and the parents of the recently deceased starlet of WASTE (Chip Zien and Liz Larsen).

'In the beginning there is Boyo (Niko RedStar), consumed with grief over the rape and murder of his true love, Lula (Megan Lane). He blames himself for her tragic fate and becomes obsessed with the memory of their perfection in each other’s eyes. This obsession consumes him and leads to suicide, but there is a surprise waiting for Boyo; at the moment he pulls the trigger, his mind explodes and reforms into the world of The Why--his search for answers and meaning beginning anew.

The Why is an experiential meditation on death, on loves lost, the duality of mind, and ultimately the nature of attachment and memory turned obsession. It takes place simultaneously in life, and in the nowhere place (a place of memory). The film revolves around three characters at the moment of death, where they find themselves existing in a place absent of love, absent of hate and absent of reason. The tighter they hold on to the illusion of what was- the farther out they spiral into a dark, surreal, suspended animation of the mind.
