NEW INC, the New Museum's cultural incubator, welcomes its fourth annual class for the September 2017 to August 2018 program cycle, with renewed partnerships and new membership tracks.
Over eighty members working at the intersection of art, design, technology, and entrepreneurship will gain access to NEW INC's yearlong professional development program, new and upgraded equipment and resources, and an expanding network of mentors.
The members this year range from individual practitioners such as artists, designers, and storytellers, to collectives, studios, nonprofits, and startups. In keeping with NEW INC's mission to foster cultural value, many of the members are committed to projects that prioritize social impact, addressing issues of surveillance, climate change, discrimination, disability, and access, among other pressing humanitarian concerns.
With the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, eight projects investigating technology's impact on the future of art museums will benefit from the inaugural Museum Technology Track, which includes fully-subsidized memberships, custom-designed workshops, multiple research trips, and opportunities to receive seed grants. The Kate Spade & Company Foundation will continue to support eight projects spearheaded by women in art and technology. With Futureworks Shops, two projects focused on advanced manufacturing will benefit from subsidized memberships as well as access to targeted programming and a consortium of nine additional production spaces throughout New York City. Futureworks Shops is part of New York City Economic Development Corporation's Futureworks NYC.
Over the course of the twelve-month program, NEW INC members receive professional development training and mentorship to support their project development and individual growth. Previous members have presented work at Art Basel Miami Beach, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, the Festival de Cannes, Tribeca Film Festival, SIGGRAPH, Moogfest, and Panorama Music Festival, and have been recognized as emerging leaders in their respective industries. Members also have an opportunity to present their work at NEW INC's Demo Day presentations.
