From 1958 to 1968 the Caffe Cino in the West Village of New York City provided a safe haven to performers and playwrights who invented the Off-Off-Broadway movement. Seated under a canopy of twinkle lights, and curiosities that made up the Cino' decor, audiences found themselves immersed in a play, as performers often entered and exited scenes through the front door or from behind the coffee counter. The Broadway hit DAMES AT SEA premiered at the Caffe Cino in 1966, as were other groundbreaking theater works by Sam Shepard, Doric Wilson, John Guare, Tom Eyen, and Lanford Wilson, among many others.

Artist and writer, Magie Dominic, the archivist of the Caffe Cino, comes to the library to share remarkable stories of the birthplace of Off-Off-Broadway, illustrated by one-of-kind artifacts from the Library's Caffe Cino collection. This event will be of special interest to people interested in the foundation of new theater originating in the 1960's, and the place where all writers were offered a safe space for their work.

"Magic Time at the Caffe Cino" is slated for December 7, 6PM - 8PM at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center (Bruno Walter Auditorium). Reserve your free seat here.
