Last Thursday, November 6th, it was announced that Café Edison in Times Square has been denied a new lease by The Hotel Edison management. The diner -- which has served as a hub for the Broadway community for more than 30 years, and has counted Neil Simon, August Wilson, Jackie Mason, Matthew Broderick, and Sarah Jessica Parker among its many fans -- is expected to close at the end of the year. The story has sparked an outpouring of support; most recently, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer sent a letter of support, asking the hotel's owner to grant Café Edison a new lease.
Last weekend, Jeremiah Moss of the blog Vanishing New York organized a Lunch Mob at the Café Edison. Over 600 people attended. This weekend, he's doing it again -- twice. On Saturday, November 15 at 12:00 pm EST, patrons and protesters will gather for lunch while magicians of the famous Magic Table, a Theatre District legend since 1942, will perform hocus pocus and sleight of hand over bowls of matzo ball soup. On Sunday, November 16 at 12:30 pm EST, the Bergen County Players will perform key scenes from Neil Simon's "45 Seconds from Broadway," including a rousing speech about the Café Edison that proclaims: "And when dis place is gone, the entire Broadway will slide into the East River!"DETAILS:
