Lori Bookstein Fine Art Opens Sarah Lutz's FESTOON Exhibit Today

By: Sep. 10, 2015

Lori Bookstein Fine Art is pleased to announce a new installation by Sarah Lutz. This is the artist's first solo-exhibition with Lori Bookstein Fine Art.

In Lutz's immersive paintings, subject matter and process are interwoven. The physical act of painting and the evolving narrative occur in tandem, each informing the other, until the work is complete. To quote Mike Carroll of Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, MA, movement and gesture translate into "surfaces textured and active and full with 'points of arrival,' concentrated areas where dimension, color, light and volume meet and dance in relative proximity."

Festoon is the site-specific, mixed media painting Lutz has created for the Open Window Project. She employs a wide range of materials, tools, and methods; she exploits the pure and varied physicality of her materials while also exploring their alchemistic potential. Passages that are seemingly accidental are in fact deliberate and contextual. Her expansive approach translates into a chaotic pictorial world that seems barely contained; teeming with complexity but upon closer observation, ruled by a greater order and meaning, like a lush, well-tended garden.

Sarah Lutz holds a B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. from The American University. Her paintings and prints have been shown widely, including solo and group exhibitions at The Schoolhouse Gallery, Provincetown, MA, The Richmond Art Center, Windsor, CT, Brick Walk Books and Fine Art, West Hartford, CT, The Painting Center, New York, INK Miami, Lohin Geduld Gallery, New York, and The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Galleries at Skidmore College. The artist has received fellowships from Dartmouth College, the Vermont Studio Center, and MAPSpace in Port Chester, NY. She has exhibited annually in Provincetown, MA since 2002 where she is represented by The Schoolhouse Gallery. She is the subject of an Artist Profile in this year's issue of Provincetown Arts Magazine and currently has a solo exhibition on view at Main Window in Dumbo, Brooklyn. She lives and works in New York City and Truro, Massachusetts.

The Open Window Project was conceived as a project space by which to showcase the work of emerging artists and those artists who may not necessarily fit into the gallery's program. While the gallery has always maintained the tradition of representing a focused group of core artists, it is excited about the ways in which working with other artists through the Open Window Project will enhance the dialogue surrounding the gallery's primary agenda. The Open Window Project will occupy the street front window on Tenth Avenue between 18th and 19th Streets.

Sarah Lutz: Festoon will be on view from today, September 10, through October 17, 2015. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 10th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 am to 6:00 pm.
