Live Recording of James Braly's One-Man Show LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION Gets Digital Release 4/7

By: Apr. 02, 2014

Following its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, sold-out Off-Off and Off-Broadway runs, a 14-city national tour presented and produced by Meredith Vieira Productions, and a memoir published by St. Martin's Press, a live audio recording of master storyteller James Braly's critically-acclaimed one-man show will be released on iTunes, Amazon and other digital platforms on April 7, 2014 entitled LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION: Live from Bass Performance Hall.

James Braly is the writer and performer of LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION (20 Years of Monogamy in One Terrifying Hour), directed by Hal Brooks. It is an autobiographical dark comedy that cuts back and forth between the deathbed wedding of Braly's sister and his own tragically comic marital adventures of 20 high-conflict years...or as thirteen couples counselors called it, "a passionate, bi-polar relationship."

Hailed as a "masterpiece of storytelling" (The List, Edinburgh), "gaspingly funny" (Variety), "never less than excellent" (The New York Times), "fascinating and funny, dangerous and bizarrely heart-warming," (Portsmouth Herald), and "simultaneously disturbing and snort-wine-out-your-nose hysterical" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram), it was a New York Times Critics' Pick, a Time Out New York Critics' Pick, and named Best Small Tour 2013 by Theater Critic Matt Lowry.

The live audio recording is produced by Meredith Vieira and Amy Rapp of Meredith Vieira Productions. The show was performed in front of a live audience in June 2013 and recorded with permission of Performing Arts Fort Worth in McDavid Studio at Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth, TX. A live post-show Q&A will also be available to download.

James Braly's stories have been broadcast nationally on This American Life, The Moth podcast, NPR, and Marketplace. He has performed in theatres, festivals, and art venues around the world, including The Whitney Museum, Long Wharf Theatre, and the Moth, where he was featured on The Moth National Story Tour Sponsored by TNT and is the first two-time winner of The Moth GrandSlam storytelling competition in New York. He continues to tour with The Moth, which featured him in recent shows in New York, Boston, and Portland. His first book, Life in a Marital Institution (20 Years of Monogamy in One Terrifying Memoir), was published last year by St. Martin's Press.

Meredith Vieira Productions is a film/TV/theatre production company. They recently produced the critically-acclaimed, ratings-record-breaking feature documentary THE WOMAN WHO WASN'T THERE. Nine-time Emmy Award winning journalist and host Meredith Vieira will debut her new syndicated talk show, THE MEREDITH VIEIRA SHOW, in September 2014.
