New
York University's New Plays for Young Audiences Series has announced
its 2006 summer season. Three new plays will be performed at the
historic Provincetown Playhouse this June, with Tony-nominee Bryony Lavery to premiere a developmental reading of Red Sky this weekend.Founded in 1997 by
Lowell and Nancy Swortzell, NYU's prize-winning project (Special
Recognition Award from the American Alliance in Theatre and Education)
"New Plays for Young Audiences" has been held each June for the last
eight years and has developed twenty-four new plays, many of which have
won awards, and received publication and production throughout the
country. "Plays for Young Audiences" have been written in the past by
playwrights such as Jose Cruz Gonzalez, Kevin Willmott, Laurie Brooks,
Y York, Max Bush, and Robert Sandburg. An open forum discussion with
the playwright and creative team follows each performance.Red Sky, by Byrony Lavery (Frozen) "is a companion play to Lavery's widely produced More Light, which
features a chorus of the entombed Emperor's wives. The chorus element
in this script are the men waiting outside the tomb. It is about man
creating art to leave a mark on the world for following generations to
discover," state press notes. The show will be directed by Anthony
Banks, and is appropriate for mature teenagers. It will be presented
June 10th and 11th.
Y York's Getting Near to Baby will
be directed by Mark Lutwak, and is appropriate for ages seven and up.
"Willa Jo and her Little Sister are sent to live with Aunt Patty
because their grief stricken Mother can no longer care for them. Life
with Patty, a narrow minded over socially correct, but humorous lady,
offers the girls little solace and little understanding. The sisters
climb to her rooftop to see the sun rise but won't come down until they
can explain the grief they, too, feel over the loss of their Baby
Sister. It is an uplifting story about grief, healing and the power of
acceptance." The show will be performed on June 18th and 19th.The Golden Apple,
by Cecily O'Neill, is "an adaptation of Lady Gregory's Irish fairytale
about a Prince who searches for the Golden Apple to cure his dying
father. A thrilling Story of a Giant, an Evil Witch, and an imprisoned
Princess enacted with hilarity, warmth, suspense, and courage." Audrey
Coldron will direct the play, which is appropriate for all ages. It
will be presented on June 24th and 25th.
"With New Plays for
Young Audiences, Provincetown Playhouse returns this June for its ninth
year with three new plays and a graduate course in play development.
Public readings are performed each weekend with an open forum
discussion following each performance. This program honors the
traditions and history of the Playhouse where the early plays of Eugene
O'Neill, Susan Glaspell, and Edna St. Vincent Millay in addition to a
host of other playwrights were first presented. However, this series
devotes its efforts to the development of new works for children, youth
and family audiences."The shows play Saturdays at 3 PM and 7:30
PM and Sundays at 3 PM. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for
children, high school students, or with a valid NYU ID. For ticket
reservations, call (212) 998-5867. The Provincetown Playhouse is
located at 133 MacDougal St.
