Laurie Krauz & Daryl Kojak Bring UNPLUGGED Version of Critically Acclaimed TAPESTRY REWOVEN To Cafe Noctambulo at Pangea, 11/7

By:

Back in 2004, MAC and Bistro Award-winning jazz singer Laurie Krauz was working out in her health club when Carole King's classic pop song "You've Got a Friend" from King's iconic 1971 album Tapestry came through her headphones. As the song played, Krauz had an epiphany: Tapestry REWOVEN.

"I realized the phrase meant re-imaging the entire Tapestry album from a jazz and blues sensibility," Krauz says, "and the idea excited me musically and emotionally." So she brought the concept to her long-time collaborator and arranger Musical Director Daryl Kojak and the duo embarked on a several year project to weave new interpretations of the Tapestry classics which ultimately became a critically acclaimed show. Featuring a five-piece band (including Kojak on piano) and a trio of backup singers, Krauz premiered Tapestry Rewoven at the Metropolitan Room in August 2008, performed it frequently at the jazz club Iridium during 2009, and headlined with the show at B.B. King's Blues Club in Times Square in September 2009. The show has since played throughout New York and the country to rave reviews, which have celebrated Tapestry Rewoven for being musically inventive while still being reverent to the brilliance of Carole King's original songs.

"Extraordinary work . . . Every element and every moment contribute unerringly to an unforgettable, quite remarkable whole."--Roy Sander, Bistro Awards critic and columnist

"It could be a masterwork not unlike her idol's."--David Finkle, Backstage

"Tapestry Rewoven is a unique work of contemporary jazz . . . It promises to deliver its own stamp of 'classic.'"--Elizabeth Ahlfors, Cabaret Scenes

Now Krauz and Kojak have reinvented their original show (see video) into Tapestry Rewoven UNPLUGGED and the duo-with just Krauz singing and Kojak at piano--will perform two sets at Café Noctambulo at Pangea (178 2nd Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets) on Saturday, November 7 at 7 and 9 pm. The cover is $20 with a $15 food/beverage minimum. For reservations, call 212-995-0900 or reserve here.

Krauz and Kojak first performed their UNPLUGGED version of Tapestry Rewoven at Union Temple of Brooklyn last November and it went over so well they decided to perform the "band-less" set in nightclubs. Cabaret Life Productions' Stephen Hanks, who booked the Union Temple show believes this stripped down edition is ideal for Cafe Noctambulo at Pangea. "The audience response at the Temple was positive, I immediately thought the Laurie/Daryl combo alone had legs. The audience at Cafe Noctambulo should love it."

Named on of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time in a 2007 book by noted jazz critic Scott Yanow, Bronx-born Laurie Krauz is a three-time MAC Award-winner and a two-time Bistro Award-winner. A multiple Bistro Award-winner, Daryl Kojak has worked on the New York music scene for more than 30 years as a pianist, producer, composer, songwriter, arranger and musical director. In addition to Laurie Krauz, he has performed live or in the recording studio with countless Broadway, film, concert, recording, and cabaret stars, including Kristen Chenoweth, Catherine Russell, Mark Nadler, Sandra Bernhard, Warren Vaché, and Jackie Hoffman.
