Filmed and set in Los Angeles, Dr. Horrible tells the story of Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris), an aspiring super villain; Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion), his nemesis; and Penny (Felicia Day), their mutual love interest.

The show first streamed live online in July 2008. Whedon directed and co-wrote the musical tragicomedy miniseries in three acts with his brothers Zack Whedon (television writer) and Jed Whedon (composer) and his wife, actress Maurissa Tancharoen, during the 2008 WGA writers' strike. Dr. Horrible won a 2009 Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Shortform Program.

Whedon most recently directed Marvel's super-successful film The Avengers. He has also helmed Firefly, Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse and many more.
